About the Poppy

Poppies are herbaceous annual, biennial or short lived perennial plants. Poppies can be over a metre tall with flowers up to 15 centimetres across. Flowers of this species (not cultivars) have 4-6 petals. The petals are showy, and can be of almost any colour with markings. The petals are crumpled in the bud and as blooming finishes, the petals often lie flat before falling away. In the temperature zones, Poppies bloom from Spring in to early Summer.

Growing Poppies

Sprinkle your mixture of seed and sand sparingly across your chosen area. This will help to reduce the need to thin the plants later on. Dust a light amount of soil on top of the seeds (do not cover them) and gently firm it down to set the seeds in place. Water the area, keeping it moist, to allow the seeds to germinate. After germination and when the plants have reached at least 50cm in height, thin your plants to around 25-30cm apart, At the end of the growing season, the plants can be cut back at the stems ready for the new growth.
