The Violet
(faithfulness, wisdom, and hope)
About the Violet
Violets typically have heart-shaped leaves, and asymmetrical flowers.
The shape of the petals defines many species, for example,
some Violets have a spur at the end of each petal.
Colours vary greatly, with some being violet, as their name suggests,
but others are blue, yellow, white and cream, as well as bi-coloured.
Growing Violets
Violets are best grown in the dappled shade of deciduous trees,
Plant Violets in early Spring, 4 to 6 weeks before your last frost date.
Choose a site with full sun to light shade. Violets like well drained, fairly
rich soil, so for best results, work a little compost in, at planting time.
Plant 4 to 8 inches apart, depending on the variety.
Water only moderately. Although they love cool conditions,
Violets do not need huge amounts of water.
Amethyst
(Birthstone of February)
